International Women's Day has been growing in momentum since its establishment in 1910, when a handful of women in the Soviet Bloc nations decided to stand up to be counted. The initiative really picked up steam when the UN decided to sanction the movement in the 1970's. And with the addition of online forums and virtual global gatherings, the effort has further and further reach. The original intent was to fight for social justice, equality, and rights for women, and in many parts of the globe that is still the main concern.
