International Women’s Day has been growing in momentum since its establishment in 1910, when a handful of women in the Soviet Bloc nations decided to stand up to be counted. The initiative really picked up steam when the UN decided to sanction the movement in the 1970’s. And with the addition of online forums and virtual global gatherings, the effort has further and further reach. The original intent was to fight for social justice, equality, and rights for women, and in many parts of the globe that is still the main concern. In the West, the day has evolved more towards celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of women in all aspects of society. This March 8th, we will once again honor the pioneers and visionaries that came before us, as well as the women currently taking the world by storm. Around the world – including in cities across America – there will be concerts, galas, career fairs, symposiums and panel discussions to observe the holiday. But if you wish to participate without traveling, there are thousands of women in the Port Charlotte area who are making an impact – just look around you! Whether she is a foster mom who took in abandoned children, an advocate fighting against human trafficking, or a mentor in an after-school program, there are amazing women everywhere who are making a difference on a local or regional level. School teachers, lawyers, politicians, law enforcement officers, shelter workers, whether professional or volunteer -these are the local heroes who deserve our respect on International Women’s Day.
Strong Flowers for Strong Women: Both protea and gladioli blooms signify strength and courage – and they make exquisite arrangements! Add palm or laurel leaves, which both represent victory and success.
Write a quick note to a few people in your community who are working hard for the common good, and tell them that they are doing a great job. (if you know them personally, send flowers!) Volunteer at a local girls club or after-school program. Donate to an initiative to lift women out of poverty with job training and life skills. There are so many ways to invest in your own neighborhood and celebrate International Women’s Day on a local level. At Port Charlotte Florist, we create floral designs and arrangements that honor women every day. We’d love to help.
