Bring in the Blooms with Hanging Planters

Want to add some instant charm, warmth, and style to your front porch, backyard, or even your living room? Then hanging planters are a quick and easy wat to accomplish that. Here at Port Charlotte Florist, we love all things green and realize the emotional and health benefits plants bring into our lives, which is why, even if you live in a small space, you can still bring the garden to you.

What Is a Hanging Planter?

A hanging planter is a green or blooming plant in a container that is suspended from the ceiling from a variety of different materials. Rope, chains, macramé… these are all typical hanging decoration in which the planter sits. There are many DIY planter hangers on the internet, or pre-made ones you can pick up from the store. They are an inexpensive and great way to bring life to any empty space.

Which Plants Work Best In Hanging Planters?

What’s your sense of style? There are a variety of baskets you can use for your plant, ranging from plastic to wicker, ceramic, moss, or even a tin can. What matters most, is actually making sure you have the right size basket for your plant. A basket too small would lead to constant watering and pruning back a plant that wants to bust out of it. Bigger baskets tend to be better as they have higher water retention which equals less maintenance. It’s best to choose your plant first and then suit the basket to the plant. Just make sure your container has drainage holes.

Which Flowers Are Best for Hanging Planters?

If the plant will mostly be in the sun, choose one that thrives in sunny conditions. Examples include Million Bells, Garden Verbena, English Ivy, Spider Plant, or succulents. For plants that prefer less sun, choose Devil’s Ivy, Boston Fern, Silver Bells, Impatiens, and Pansies.

How to Properly Care for Hanging Planters

Maintaining the proper amount of moisture in your hanging plant is essential. For indoor plants, the air close to the ceiling tends to be drier and warmer, causing hanging plants to dry out quicker. If the topsoil is dry to the touch, it needs water. Fertilizer is important as well if you want your hanging plant to thrive.  Pruning and cutting back wayward growing vines keeps plants looking full, lush, and healthy.
