Long before random acts of kindness became in vogue, a young candy worker in Cleveland imagined a day to show strangers that people cared about them. The initiative was the brainchild of Herbert Kingston, and in 1922 the candy company that he worked for took his idea and turned it into reality. The concept was simple - on a designated day, over 20,000 boxes of candy were handed out at orphanages, nursing homes, and to the homeless. While it was originally designated as a one-time event, the media picked up the story and it became a sensation. By 1927, New York State had joined in, and the tradition began to grow regionally. It was dubbed Sweetest Day to reflect the gifts of candy.
A full century later, Sweetest Day is still celebrated in many part of the United States, although it had now grown to include not only sweets, but any act of kindness - or any sweet gesture designed to encourage or inspire someone. Port Charlotte Florist would love to help you in letting people in your community know that you love and support them. Read More about Sweetest Day Celebrates Kindness »
"It is as grandmothers that our mothers come into the fullness of their grace." ~Christopher Morley
When Marian McQuade petitioned Congress to establish National Grandparents Day in 1978, she had a very specific vision in mind as to what the day should represent. The West Virginia mother of 15 (and grandmother to many more) was determined to establish a day which would honor traditions, legacy and history - as well as to encourage families to gather regularly to let generations learn from each other. International Women's Day has been growing in momentum since its establishment in 1910, when a handful of women in the Soviet Bloc nations decided to stand up to be counted. The initiative really picked up steam when the UN decided to sanction the movement in the 1970's. And with the addition of online forums and virtual global gatherings, the effort has further and further reach. The original intent was to fight for social justice, equality, and rights for women, and in many parts of the globe that is still the main concern. In the West, the day has evolved more towards celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of women in all aspects of society. This March 8th, we will once again honor the pioneers and visionaries that came before us, as well as the women currently taking the world by storm.
